Obituary for John W. Read

John Watson Read, 83 of Enfield returned home peacefully on Oct. 7th 2016 to join his beloved wife Lorraine (Ferriere) Read. Dad was born Dec. 1, 1932 in Paris France, son of John W F Read and Parisian mom Leontine Trousselle. In 1940 at the age of 7, Dad first came to the US when his American father was allowed to leave France to flee the impending war as Germany first occupied France. In 1946, his family would move to Belgium, and he would attend University in Leige. Back to the US, he would stay and attend GM's Flint Institute where he received his engineering degree. Although he maintained his dual cultures well, his significant contribution to the Read heritage would be to reconnect the bloodline back in the US. He is the 34th John Read dating back to England 1100. The first John Read of his bloodline would come in 1635 with cousin Gov. Winthrop settling in Dorchester MA. Many infamous historical relations, and events came from this bloodline as one of the first families of New England. Though born in Paris, where his father chose to live after France, Dad's significant US pedigree would have remained in Belgium. Dad worked at New Departure of Bristol, Colt Firearms, and the State of Ct. Dept Public Works Dept. in Hartford as a senior design (mechanical) engineer. He made his home in Enfield in 1955. He was a communicant of Holy Family church, participated in the Liturgy Committee and St. Vincent de Paul Society and attended church daily. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast. He is survived by his three children, John Paul M. Read, his wife Colleen, Susan A. Read, her husband Jeffrey Alexander and Alan P. Read, 6 grandchildren, Daryl, Brittany, Ashley, Chad, John Paul, Marcel; 5 great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Hannah, Desiree, Jamie, and Jeffrey; 6 children born of his "Angel" Lorraine and their families, his sisters, Lucie Read and Dora Genard both of Belgium. He was predeceased by siblings Marcel and Anne. Relatives and friends may join the family for a calling hour on Thursday, October 20, 2016 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, Enfield, CT. A funeral procession will gather at the funeral home at 10:30 for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Family Church, 23 Simon Road, Enfield, CT. Burial will follow in St. Patrick King Street Cemetery. Memorial donations in John's memory may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, C/O Holy Family Church, 23 Simon Road, Enfield, CT 06082.
