Obituary for Barbara G Woods (Galbraith)

Barbara G Woods (Galbraith)
Barbara Ann (Galbraith) Woods, of Enfield and formerly of Coventry died on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at the age of 87. Barbara was born on Oct. 21, 1929 to Richard W. Galbraith and Helen Cunningham Galbraith in Exeter, NH. She lived at the Beaton House at Phillips-Exeter School until 1946 when she moved to Hampton, NH. It was there that she met her husband, Robert George Woods and they were married on July 24, 1954. They moved to Connecticut where Bob worked at Pratt & Whitney and Barbara was a phys ed teacher in East Hartford. In 1964, they left their home on Lathrop Drive in Coventry and built their new home on Swamp Road. Together they lived there for 32 years before Bob’s death in 1996. Barbara moved to Enfield in 2009 to share her later years with her daughter and family. Barbara is survived by her son, Greg Woods and his girlfriend Jen Labbe; and her daughter and son in law Sandie and David Pino along with her adored grandchildren DJ and Valerie. She was predeceased by her father in 1960 and her mother in 1988; her brother Richard and brother Alec. Barbara was well loved by everyone who knew her. She had dear friends who lasted a lifetime. Barbara touched many students during her teaching years. She was fun-loving, fair, smart and always advocating for the rights of the kids. Barbara loved spending time with her children and grandchildren either playing kickball in the back yard, going to Coventry Lake or camping in NH. Her family was always her priority. She also loved being active and kept busy swimming, skiing and especially, playing tennis. Barbara loved playing board games and cards, and later fell in love with scrapbooking… or at least watching her friends do it! As her years progressed, her memories were stolen by dementia. However, she never failed to smile, to join in the party and to wish everyone a “Happy Day.” She made just as many friends in her later life as she did during her younger years. She touched everyone she met with her easy going, warm and loving personality and she never lost her spunk or her contagious smile. Her family would like to thank the truly wonderful caregivers that she was blessed to have through her final journey. From the amazing aides we had in our home along with the caring staff at Enfield ADC, to the loving staff at Parkway Pavilion and finally the compassionate care of Masonicare Hospice, she was truly blessed to have these people in her life along her journey often called, “The Long Good Bye…” Calling hours will be held from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, May 7, 2017 at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., Enfield. Barbara's funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday May 8, 2017 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church (Please meet at Church), 383 Hazard Ave., Enfield. Committal will be held at 9:00 a.m. at Coventry Center Cemetery prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Walk Team that was created 3 years ago in her name, BFF, Bobbie’s Family and Friends through the Alzheimer’s Association which can be accessed at http://act.alz.org/site/TR?fr_id=10419&pg=personal&px=7470817, or to the Residents Recreation Fund at Parkway Pavilion, 1157 Enfield St., Enfield, CT 06082.
