Donald W. (Don) Oliva, 82, of Windsor Locks, CT beloved husband of Gertrude “Trudy” (Bednarz) Oliva of 60 years died peacefully on Friday, October 28, 2016 after a brief illness. Don was born on July 24, 1934 in Hartford, CT son of the late William “Babe” and Frances (Tornelli) Oliva of Windsor Locks, CT. Don grew up in Windsor Locks and lived in town his entire life. He graduated from Windsor Locks High School, class of 1952. He served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957. On July 21, 1956, Don married the love of his life and high school sweetheart. Together, they raised three wonderful children. Don worked for Kaman Aerospace in Bloomfield, CT, for 45 years, retiring in 1998. A lifelong NY Yankee fan, Don also looked forward to watching the UCONN basketball men and woman’s team each season. He was an avid reader and US history buff. Don loved gardening, watching and feeding the birds in his back yard and sitting at the beach. Don was an active member of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, having served as an usher, a member of the finance board and the building committee. He was also a Third Degree Knight and lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 26 in Windsor Locks. Don is survived by his wife, Trudy of 60 years; his daughters Sherry Steines and her husband Alan from Madison, CT, Debbie Ricci and her husband, Jay from Westfield, MA, and his son Donald Jay Oliva and his wife, Mary, from Hopedale, MA; seven grandchildren, Alexis Steines, Alexandria, VA, David and Alyson Steines, Scarborough, ME, Christopher Steines and his fiancée Wendy Blair, Madison, CT, Ali Suenaert, Cumberland, RI, Kyle Oliva Windsor Locks, CT, Zachary and Megan Oliva Hopedale, MA; his brother Robert and Alice Oliva, Windsor Locks and multiple nieces, nephews, good friends and neighbors. Relatives and friends may join the family for visiting hours on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Windsor Locks Funeral Home, 441 Spring Street, Windsor Locks, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 52 South Elm Street, Windsor Locks, CT (please meet at church). Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Robert’s Bellarmine Church, 52 South Elm Street, Windsor Locks, CT 06096 or to the Bladder Cancer organization, BCAN.org.
