John Derby Adams, 83, of Enfield, Connecticut, passed quietly on March 8, 2017 at Suffield By The River, Suffield, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. John was predeceased by the love of his life, Rita, with whom he was blessed to share 53 years of marriage.
John was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late Woodward and Rachel Adams on May 9, 1933. He graduated from Shady Side Academy in 1950, Yale University in 1954 and the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1959. Except for several years when he served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut beginning in 1963, he was engaged in the private practice of law, first in solo practice and since 1983 partnered with his daughter at Adams & Eliason. John served as the Town Attorney for the Town of Enfield from 1967 to 1977, and in 1977 was appointed by Governor Ella Grasso as a Hearing Officer for the Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities. He was also a board member for many years for various organizations including Community Health Resources, Educational Resources for Children, and the Enfield Juvenile Review Board. He has been a member of the Enfield Rotary Club since 1965. John was an avid fan of the Pirates, Steelers, Patriots, Whalers and UConn men and women’s basketball teams, loved to travel and take photographs, and sang with the Enfield Community Chorus, the Notarians and the Beethoven Chorus.
He is survived by three daughters, Pamela D. Adams of Andover, Deborah W. A. Eliason and her husband, Kevin G. Mooney, of Enfield, and Samantha C. Bishop and her husband, Kenneth, of Taft, CA; two sons, David T. Adams and his wife, Lita, of Feeding Hills, MA, and John B. Adams and Kelly Blakeney, of Randolph, VT; and a brother, David C. Adams, and his wife, Patricia, of Galveston, TX. He also leaves 10 grandchildren: Christopher and Daniel Eliason of Enfield, Henry and Abigail Adams of Feeding Hills, MA, Vincent, Angelina and Anastasia Rivera of Taft, CA; Samuel Adams of Randolph, VT, Rebecca Tomaszewski of Montpelier, VT, Sara Tomaszewski of Northfield, VT; and many loving great-grandchildren. His family is grateful to his conscientious caregivers whose kind service, friendship and affection brightened his last few years.
John’s family will receive relatives and friends at the Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, on Sunday, March 12, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial will be private and held at a later date.
