Formerly of Windsor Locks and Suffield, Anthony “Tony” Zaine, 93, passed away after a brief illness at MeadowBrook of Granby. Tony joined his beloved wife of 47 years, Emma (Bjorkland) in heaven, on her birthday, Thursday, August 2, 2018. Tony was the son of Frank and Mary (Vallano) from Popoli, Italy. He was born and raised in Hartford. He was a proud Veteran of WWII, volunteering for service in March of 1943. He served overseas for 23 months as an Army PFC. He was involved with the Battle of Normandy in Northern France and the Rhineland Campaign in Central Europe. He was honorably discharged in December, 1945. After the war, Tony was a dedicated employee at Joseph Merritt & Co. for 40 years, retiring in 1988. He loved his Yankee’s, John Wayne and the music of Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa. A born drummer, Tony was always tapping away on any surface whenever a song was playing. He loved spending time with Emma, either at home or on vacations at the Connecticut shoreline or in upstate VT. He was a private, proud man always tending to his immaculate cars, his driveway or his yard. Tony was predeceased by his siblings, John Zaine, Sr. and Rose Huntington, but he is survived by his sister, Katherine Fanelli of S.C. He also leaves behind Emma’s children, Dale Gamo (Ralph), Donald Bjorkland (Marian), Joan Dahlstrom (Dave),Harry Bjorkland (Maureen),Thomas Bjorkland, and Fred Bjorkland, He has many nieces, nephews, other family and friends who will miss him, especially his niece, Jo-Ann Smith of Granby, who has been his caretaker and companion for many years. A funeral services for Tony will be celebrated on Saturday, August 11, 2018, at 1 pm at the Windsor Locks Funeral Home, 441 Spring St., Windsor Locks. His family will receive relatives and friends from 12 noon till 1 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project , P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8517.
