Obituary for Charles E. Ammons

Charles E. Ammons
In addition to being a man of his convictions, Charles Ammons of Broad Brook,
Connecticut, was a lover of life. When he died at age 82 on Tuesday, July 26, 2017, at Kimberly
Hall Rehab Center in Windsor, Connecticut, a light was extinguished in the lives of his many
friends and family members. He loved lively conversation and adored people that had a creative
spark. If he respected you and your principles, he would be your advocate forever. Chuck shared
his life with Russell O’Connor, his spouse, and best friend. They had a long and happy life
together for 39 years. As Chuck’s health declined, he never had to walk that lonely path alone.
Russell was there for him every step of the way. Charles E. (“Chuck”or “Buddy”) Ammons was born on June 8, 1935 to the late Dorothy Rae Thornton Pearson Ammons and the late Charles Pearson of Washington DC. He was raised and educated in Alexandria, Virginia, and Washington DC, attending Dolly Madison High
School and later graduating from Chamberlain Vocational School with a commercial art
certificate. He started his retail advertising career at Lambson’s, Woodward and Lathrop, and
the Hecht Company department stores. In 1962 he moved to Hartford to work directly for
Ira Niemark, president of the Brown Thompson Store. In 1968, he began his career in the
advertising department of G. Fox, where he would spend a rewarding 25 years in the positions of
Art Director and Creative Director. He retired from there in 1993 after accepting numerous print
and broadcasting awards from the Connecticut Art Directors Club, and being named Executive
of the Year several times at G. Fox. In retirement, he worked as an advertising consultant for
Luttgens Ltd. and Wallace Silversmiths. Besides Russell, Chuck leaves six nieces and nephews of his late sister Betty Rae Ellis. Chuck is remembered fondly for raising her oldest son at his home in Manchester, Connecticut,
and preparing him for both high school and college. Over the years, he has remained close to his
youngest nephew, Frank James Ellis. It was Charles' wish that there would be no memorial service. Those who want to honor him are welcome to make a donation in his name to either St. Jude Children's Hospital or the Connecticut Humane Society. When you think of Charles, smile and raise a glass to him. Remember his contagious laugh, mischievous gleam in his eye, and those annual Christmas parties that he loved so much.
Well done, Chuck. Well done!
