John Francis Xavier  Manning
John Francis Xavier Manning, 83, of Enfield, passed away on Friday (Jan. 5) at his home. He was the loving husband of Veronica (Pipa) Manning. Born in New York City , a son of the late Bernard Joseph and Anne Veronica (O'Neill) Manning, he had been a resident of Crestwood, NY for most of his life, before moving to the Somers community in 1996, where he resided until moving to Enfield three years ago. Prior to his retirement, John was employed for many years in the financial marketplace on Wall Street . He was a faithful communicant of St. Cecilia Church in Wilbraham, MA and was a US Navy veteran, proudly serving as a navy pilot. He treasured family gatherings and especially valued his time with his grandchildren and great granddaughter. John also enjoyed working in his garden, sailing and was proud to have run in 2 NYC Marathons. In addition to Veronica, his devoted wife of 60 years, John leaves his four caring children and their spouses, Kathleen Manning Broggini and Richard, of Glastonbury, Carolyn Manning Palomba and Edward, of Somers, John F. X. Manning II and Cynthia, of Boxford, MA and Gregory B. Manning and Diana of New Fairfield, CT; 11 grandchildren and a great granddaughter. John is also survived by his brother, Bernard Manning of Tarrytown, NY; three sisters, Barbara Conway of Ponte Vedra, FL, Sheila Schaberick of Breezy Point, NY and Brenda Klumpp and her husband, John, of Lake Mohawk, NJ and his brother -in-law, Albert Pipa and his wife, Elizabeth, of Pleasantville, NY. He was predeceased by his grandson, Patrick Palomba and his sister, Maureen Fanning. Funeral services and burial in the Somers Center Cemetery are private. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass to be held on Friday (Jan. 12) at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of the Holy Family Retreat Center, 303 Tunxis Rd., West Hartford, CT 06107. John's family has suggested that expressions of sympathy may be in the form of memorial donations to The Holy Family Retreat Center.
