Obituary for Martha Burns (Powers)

Martha Powers Burns, 90, of New Lebanon, NY formerly of Riverton, CT, passed away peacefully at home on January 6 with her loving family gathered by her side.
Martha was born at home in Granby, CT to James and Claire (Roberts) Powers. She was raised in East Granby with her three sisters. She often recalled her "wonderful family life" telling stories of dancing and playing music with her sisters. She attended secondary school at Simsbury High School. She met the love her life, Robert W. Burns, Sr. at a dance where he literally swept her off her feet as "the best dancer on the floor". They were married for 64 years raising three loving children and forging many great memories together.
She worked for fifteen years at Mount Sinai Hospital where she and her son, Robert shared many laughs on their daily commute. Upon retirement, she worked as a companion caregiver for McLean's Nursing Home spreading her warmth, compassion and sense of humor to her clients. Her remaining retirement years were devoted to loving and caring for her grandchildren. Her medical care experiences greatly influenced the medical career choices of all her children and grandchildren.
She and her husband, Robert spent 22 years living with their son, Robert Jr. in Riverton. She made numerous trips to San Francisco to visit with her daughter, Bonnie and her grandchildren. There she enjoyed great times and long lasting friendships. In her later years, she and her husband moved to New Lebanon to live with her daughter, Robin and her family where she spent her days coloring, enjoying the garden and entertaining her grandchildren by playing the guitar with a butter knife.
She was a devout Catholic. She was a member of the Franciscan Order, serving as President of the Franciscan Order at St. Joseph's in Winsted for several years. She later joined the Immaculate Conception Church of New Lebanon once again making life-long friendships with her charm.
Her wit, her laugh, her strength and her friendly smile will be sorely missed by all but most especially by her children, Robert W. Burns Jr., Bonnie J. Burns, Robin Burns Lambert and son-in-law Timothy F. Lambert Jr., grandchildren Casey, Gabrielle, Timothy, James, Dylan Lambert, Summer Yeramian, Raven Anderson Flamand, her husband Dale Flamand and great-grandson , Caden Flamand, a sister, Bette Jakola , her husband Alan Jakola and many cherished nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Robert, her sisters Claire Shaskus and Eva Hnidziejko.
The family would like to thank the Immaculate Conception Church and her supportive friends there for their thoughtfulness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at stjude.org.
