Obituary for Howard "Howie" Mills Bromage Jr.

Print
Howard Mills "Howie" Bromage, Jr., 78, of Enfield, CT, beloved husband of Lois (Karcz) Bromage for 54 years, entered into eternal peace Saturday, March 10, 2018, at St. Francis Hospital, surrounded by his family. Born June 3, 1939, to his dear departed parents, Howard and Hilda (Mitchell) Bromage, he was a lifetime resident of the Enfield community.

Howie’s charismatic personality, adventurous spirit, infectious laugh, and deep love of family, friends, sports, church, and community guided and defined his wonderful life.

Howie graduated from Enfield High School in 1957 and from Brown University in 1961. He attended the agent training institute at Aetna Life & Casualty and graduated top of his class. He founded, owned and operated the Bromage-Wilcox Insurance Agency in Enfield, and enjoyed serving his customers and leading his agency staff for over 40 years.

Howie also devoted his time to serving the needs and welfare of the Enfield community through volunteer work for Loaves and Fishes, Meals on Wheels, the Enfield Historical Society, and the Friends of the Library.
He also greatly enjoyed traveling and hiking, making regular trips to Europe and to Arizona with his wife and his children. His most recent trip with Lois visiting Italy and hiking in the Swiss Alps was one of his most memorable.

From an early age, Howie was a gifted athlete who put his passion and hard work into all of the sports he played. He played in the first Little League in Enfield in 1950 and helped lead this Senior League team to the state tournament championship in 1953.

He lettered in Baseball (Captain), Football (Co-Captain), and Basketball at Enfield High, and was Most
Athletic Boy of his class of ‘57. Howie’s Enfield High Basketball team won the Valley Wheel Conference Championship in 1957 and was inducted into the Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017. Howie later played basketball in many USA Senior Olympics tournaments with his Connecticut team.

Howie also played varsity baseball for Brown University, helping lead his team to the Ivy League Championship in 1959 and hitting the first home run in Brown’s new stadium in 1961. He parlayed his love of baseball into a lifelong softball career in the Enfield league with the Amvets team and in the seniors leagues of Vernon and Wallingford, CT, and Ludlow and Cape Cod, MA. He enjoyed the competition, and cherished the friendships and camaraderie with his teammates most of all.

Howie was also very involved in youth sports in Enfield while his children were growing up, serving numerous years as Little League manager and CYO Basketball coach. He was honored for his many athletic accomplishments and years of service to the Town of Enfield by being individually inducted into the Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

Howie is survived by his wife Lois; his four children, David and his wife Anita of West Chester, PA, Mary of Enfield, CT, Bob of Hilton Head, SC, and John and his wife Karalyn of Kingston, MA; his six grandchildren, Grace, Matthew, Alexandra, Felicity, William, and Hannah; and his brother, Michael of Warwick, RI. He also leaves six nephews and their wives and families, many cousins, and very many dear friends. He was predeceased by his brother, William of West Granby, CT. Visitation hours will be held from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., Enfield.
