Joseph  Murtari Jr.
Joseph J. Murtari, 80,of Enfield, beloved husband of Patricia (Hill) Murtari for 56 years, passed peacefully at home surrounded by his family, Saturday, March 31, 2018. Joe was born in Endicott, New York in 1938, the son of the late Joseph Sr. and Rachel (Coluccio) Murtari.
Joe joined the Air Force when he was eighteen years old and served in an active duty status for nearly thirteen years. He transitioned from active duty to the Air National Guard and served more than thirty years progressing to the rank of Command CMSgt. He was very proud of this achievement. At the same time, he maintained his civilian career as an Air Traffic Controller at Bradley International Airport for over thirty years progressing to the levels of Tower Chief and Programs Manager.
The Air Force and the CTANG meant the world to Joe. He held many AFSCs while serving his country including ATC, Operations, Command Post and others. He loved helping and training the individuals with whom he worked. He simply loved the Air Force and what it stood for. In addition, Joe ran an Aviation Career Education (“ACE”) program that introduced at-risk children to careers in aviation. Joe also volunteered a great deal of time at the Enfield Senior Center. He was always willing to help when needed. He also enjoyed and supported UCONN Sports, especially the football and women's basketball teams, of which he was an avid fan. In the past he was active in the Ramblers Youth Football league, supported the Enfield Police and was a 100 Club member.
Besides his wife Patricia, Joseph is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Polek and her husband Clem of Feeding Hills, MA, two sons, Mark Murtari and his partner Angela Benvenuto of Enfield, Brian Murtari and his wife Michele (Roy) of Farmington; five grandchildren, Chris Polek and his fiancee Marina Ruge of Agawam, MA, Jason Polek and his partner Marcy Laine-Firaza of NY, NY, Gabrielle, Jacob, and Emily Murtari; a great granddaughter, Olivia Polek; and two sisters, Catherine Evans of East Hartford, and Patricia Prouty of Windsor Locks, his sister-in-law Rhonda (Hill) Kitzler, spouse Spense and family, and brother-in-law Doug Hill, spouse Mary and family.

Visitation hours will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2018 at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels,61 South Rd., Enfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m.Friday, April 6, 2018 at St. Patrick Church, 64 Pearl St., Enfield. (Please meet at Church). Committal with military honors, will follow at St. Patrick's King St. Cemetery. Donations in Joseph's memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
