Stuck warhead
Msg Sanzaro and myself, were dispatched to remove a lodged 30mm projectile stuck in a GAU-8 canon barrel. Assisted by Otis AFB troops, we set up the OP at Bradley, at a remote LOC. Tools were. 1. jug of anti-freeze liquid, to be dumped into the cannon barrel, 2. A 50 bmg blank CTG., inserted into the muzzle of the barrel and, 3. An electronic activation device with wires, to set off the 50 BMG CTG. 4. A suitable impact area. 5. some wise cracks and jokes. We were nervous, which explains the jokes.
Mike, turned to me and said, " this is a piece of cake."
He was right, after striking the crank box, setting of the small blast which removed the stuck warhead from the barrel.
I will always remember my friend (SLS # 3, "rusty nuts"), the Cooey 22 rifle and all the laughs we had.....Sincerely, your friend and brother in arms, TSG (ret) Gary P. Marquis.
